Join the River Trip of which the Legend Dreamed

Trip dates: July 15 – 25, 2017

George Wendt was the legendary river pioneer, river protector, a partner and a friend. We founded Sobek Expeditions together, and shared so many spectacular exploratories and adventures around the world. Join me, along with legends John Yost, Thom Beers, and the spirit of George Wendt, on the rivers of Guatemala this summer.

George Wendt, Richard Bangs, John Yost on the Zanskar River, Ladakh.

We had been planning a founder’s raft trip to Guatemala when cancer struck George down. So now, in his honor, and to celebrate his truly remarkable life, we are going forward with this special trip to Guatemala exactly one year after George’s passing, and overlapping his birthday.

Join us, if you can, on this special trip in memory of George, on this flow of memories, thanks and hope for the future of wild rivers everywhere. We’ll experience all the things that George was passionate about,  an exciting combination of rivers, Mayan wonders, above- and underground limestone fantasies, and the culture of the highlands and the Caribbean coast. A portion of the trip cost goes to one of George’s most passionately supported organizations, Friends of the River. The trip is limited to just 16 guests.

The Mayan Rivers & Ruins itinerary is a Wantok Adventures classic, blending exciting whitewater with fascinating cultural, archeological and geological attractions. We raft three exciting rivers in the Atlantic and Pacific drainages; visit the amazing ruins of Tikal & Yaxha in the Peten rainforest; enjoy the Spanish colonial architecture and art of Guatemala City and Antigua; experience Lago Izabal, Rio Dulce and the vibrant Afro-Caribbean life of Livingstone; traverse the rugged mountains of central Guatemala; and explore the other-worldly azure pools and limestone caverns of Semuc Champey, filling our days with a bewitching diversity of activities.  And all these days of adventure end with nights in hotels or lodges, where we can enjoy great meals in comfort.
