Friends
of the River, a California-based river conservation advocacy
group, honored Richard Bangs with its annual Mark Dubois
Award on Friday, October 12. Founded in 1973 in the fight
to save the Stanislaus River, FOR continues to be a leader in
river and water issues statewide and, by example, nationally.
Bangs
was introduced by his long-time colleague, and co-founder of
Sobek Expeditions (now Mountain Travel Sobek), John Yost,
and was presented the award by Mark Dubois himself. Bangs' comments
highlighted the importance of adventure travel in creating a
constituency of environmental activists who, by becoming familiar
with wild places, are willing to fight to preserve them.
